DesertStorm Inventory Management — Rig, Weight & Loot Triage

Master DesertStorm [EXTRACTION] inventory: Tab/Caps Lock grid, rig vs backpack, weight and ergonomics, quick slots, loot triage, pre-raid packing, and mid-raid reorganizing.

Last updated:

Inventory management separates DesertStorm [EXTRACTION] veterans from players who die with full backpacks but empty rigs. Loot only saves your stash if you extract alive — and extraction fails when you cannot heal fast enough, sprint to the zone, or find ammo under pressure. This guide covers Tab/Caps Lock inventory, rig versus backpack, weight and ergonomics, quick slots, loot triage, pre-raid packing, and mid-raid reorganizing so every slot earns its place.

If you are new to the loop, read how to play first, then return here once you have completed one raid.

Opening inventory: Tab and Caps Lock

Press Tab or Caps Lock to open your inventory grid at any time outside hard combat lockouts. Both keys toggle the same panel — choose whichever fits your keyboard and bind the other as backup in controls.

The inventory UI splits into:

  • Equipped slots — primary, secondary, armor, helmet, rig, backpack
  • Rig internal grid — fast-access cells on your chest rig or vest
  • Backpack grid — bulk storage with slower access in fight
  • Pockets — small secure slots if your rig tier includes them

Practice opening inventory in the headquarters safe zone before your first live raid. Muscle memory here prevents menu-deaths later.

Rig versus backpack: access speed

Your rig (chest rig or tactical vest) holds items you need during fights. Rig cells are reachable while moving and reload under pressure. Your backpack holds bulk loot and spare gear you will sort later.

Standard layout:

Slot zonePut hereWhy
Rig top rowMeds, stims, grenadesFast heal under fire
Rig middlePrimary ammo magsReload without opening backpack
Rig bottomRare keys, task itemsSecure, quick grab for doors
BackpackValuables, weapon swaps, bulkHigh capacity, slower access

Never bury your only heal stack at the bottom of a 30-slot backpack. Players who do lose raids they would otherwise win. Match rig size to your build philosophy — budget runs favor light rigs with med priority over heavy armor.

Weight and ergonomics

Weight slows sprint speed, increases stamina drain, and lengthens weapon handling animations. Ergonomics (where the UI shows it) affects how quickly you aim, heal, and loot after stopping.

Rules of thumb:

  • Every kilo matters on long walks to extract
  • Dual primaries rarely justify the weight — one main gun plus sidearm is standard
  • Drop dead weight before extract channel — low-value rocks and broken attachments
  • Heavy armor trades mobility for protection; light rigs trade protection for loot capacity

Check total weight after every major loot spike. If sprint feels sluggish, triage immediately instead of waiting until extract panic.

Quick slots and hotkeys

Quick slots bind consumables to number keys for use without full inventory open. Setup before deploy:

  1. Open inventory at headquarters
  2. Drag heals and stims into rig cells mapped to 1–4 (verify bindings in controls)
  3. Confirm grenades or smokes sit on reachable keys if your kit includes them
  4. Test once in safe zone — press each key and watch the item consume

Mid-raid, quick slots only work for items still in rig-accessible cells. Moving a med to backpack mid-fight removes it from hotkey reach until you repack.

Loot triage: value per slot

After every container or kill, run a ten-second triage:

  1. Secure task items — anything flagged in J tasks stays unless worthless
  2. Compare roubles-per-slot — use items overview and loot value mental math
  3. Upgrade weapon only if clear DPS gain — not every dropped gun beats your current kit
  4. Drop lowest value bulk when near capacity — partial bag beats death overweight
  5. Keep med capacity — sellable loot is worthless if you bleed out

High-tier attachments, keys, and electronics beat stacks of low-tier ammo unless you are broke and every rouble counts.

Pre-raid packing checklist

Before queue via M menu, pack in this order:

  1. Primary weapon — repaired, loaded, spare mags in rig
  2. Sidearm optional — same ammo family as primary if possible
  3. Armor and rig — durability checked; rig empty enough for loot path
  4. Meds minimum — two heal cycles plus one bleed stop for standard routes
  5. Task items — purchased or pulled from stash per J active tasks
  6. Keys — only what today’s route requires
  7. Backpack — leave 40–60% empty for expected loot

Cross-check against budget starter or your chosen build template. Over-packing pre-raid guarantees mid-raid drops.

Mid-raid reorganizing safely

Reorganize only when safe:

  • Inside locked rooms after clearing angles
  • Behind hard cover between firefights
  • At extract zone before starting channel timer

Never stand still in open ground sorting inventory. The reorganize flow:

  1. Open Tab/Caps Lock
  2. Move meds back to rig top row
  3. Consolidate ammo mags — drop partial empties
  4. Shift sellable loot to backpack bottom for post-extract sorting
  5. Close inventory and reload before moving

If a firefight starts mid-sort, cancel and fight — half-sorted inventory beats menu death.

Extract inventory discipline

Your layout at extract determines next raid’s budget. Before channeling:

  • Heal to full from rig meds first
  • Reload all weapons quietly
  • Drop trash weight if over encumbered
  • Secure quest items in safest container slot

Read how to extract for contested zone timing — inventory prep fails if you arrive overweight and out of heals.

Common inventory mistakes

  • Full backpack, empty rig — cannot heal when it matters
  • Two primaries plus heavy armor — cannot sprint to extract
  • Selling task items — check J before vendor dump
  • Looting every weapon — value-per-slot beats collection
  • Reorganizing in open fields — free kill for third parties

Master inventory once and every future raid gets easier — gear changes, but slot discipline survives every wipe.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I open inventory with Tab or Caps Lock?

Either works — pick one and bind the other as backup in [controls](/controls/). Consistency matters more than which key you choose.

What belongs in my rig versus backpack?

Meds, ammo, and grenades you need under fire go in the rig. Sellable loot and spare gear go in the backpack until you reorganize for extract.

How do I know if I am overweight?

Watch movement speed and stamina drain when sprinting. If you feel sluggish after looting, drop low-value bulk using [loot value rules](/items/loot-value/).

When should I reorganize mid-raid?

Only in cover between fights — never during a gunfight. Repack after major loot spikes or before walking to [extract](/guides/how-to-extract/).

Does inventory layout affect extract success?

Yes. Rig-access heals and lighter weight help you survive extract channels. Pre-pack meds in quick slots before every deploy from [builds](/builds/).
